Porcelain inlays and onlays are the ideal choice acting as fillings for lost tooth structure due to tooth decay or fracture of the tooth. They are extremely esthetic in appearance, mimicking the natural enamel of the tooth and anatomy and color better than any other material known in dentistry. Porcelain inlays and onlays are also the treatment of choice functionally speaking, because they are bonded on the tooth surface, thus strengthening the walls of the tooth.
Inlays and onlays can often be used in place of traditional dental fillings to treat tooth decay or similar structural damage. Whereas dental fillings are molded into place within the mouth during a dental visit, inlays and onlays are fabricated indirectly in a dental lab before being fitted and bonded to the damaged tooth by your dentist.
The restoration is called an inlay when the material is bonded in a prepared cavity within the center of a tooth. An onlay replaces a greater extent of tooth structure including the cusp tips of the tooth.
Porcelain inlays and onlays are conservative in approach because a minimum amount of tooth structure is removed during the preparation, and are esthetically and functionally superior to traditional amalgam and resin fillings.
Typically, an inlay or onlay procedure is completed in two dental visits. During your first visit, your dentist must prepare the damaged tooth. A molded impression of the tooth is then taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where an inlay or onlay is fabricated by experienced dental technicians. A fitted temporary inlay in the shape of the final restoration can be created during this visit to protect the tooth while the final restoration is being fabricated in the dental laboratory. At your second visit, the temporary is removed and your inlay or onlay is fitted and bonded to the tooth by your dentist.
Dental Inlays and onlays are extremely stable restorations that seldom fail. Porcelain inlays and onlays boast excellent functional longevity and natural esthetic.
